Murdoch Mysteries

In the late 1890s, police Detective William Murdoch takes a new, more scientific approach to solving crimes. Assisted by coroner Dr. Julia Ogden and Constable George Crabtree, Murdoch introduces such concepts as finger marks and lie detecting machines. He has the support of his somewhat doubtful superior, Inspector Brackenreid, though at times, even he finds Murdoch's methods - and claims - somewhat astounding.

An explosion at a market shop knocks Constables Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) to the street. Detective Murdoch's (Yannick Bisson) survey of the scene uncovers a homemade incendiary device. Peter Milne (Brock Johnson), the irate shopkeeper, demands to Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) that the police cover his considerable losses. But with Higgins seriously injured in the blast, Brackenreid is enraged by his selfishness. Further investigation reveals many other neighbours don't think favourably of Milne, particularly Angus Trout (John Jarvis), who was driven out of business by the aggressive merchant. As Murdoch, Higgins and Brackenreid develop theories about the incident, Brackenreid believes the constabulary may have been the actual targets, given the proximity of the shop to a new police callbox. The notion is quickly quashed when Murdoch is greeted by Terrance Meyers (Peter Keleghan), a high-level government official. Meyers suggests that the Canadian government's diplomatic effort to secure a state visit by the American President was the motive. As for suspects, he's certain he knows who was behind what he deems an anarchist terror attack - noted Communist and labour activist Emma Goldman (Lisa Goldman). But to make the case, they'll need to infiltrate the dangerous group.
